Schools in Spain

July 28th, 2010

Costa Blanca is loaded with international schools, although again this is only true for the larger cities. The richest pickings are to be found in Alicante, Valencia and Javea, where British expats are especially well-catered for. International schools offer a foreign curriculum and the IB, and most classes are conducted predominantly in the home country´s language, with some Spanish included. Many expats choose not to send their children to international schools though, as there is a risk of ´ghettoising´ expat kids into expat communities and never giving them a chance to assimilate. Luckily for these families, school in Spain is free. The major centres on the Costa Blanca have very comprehensive transport networks, within the cities and between them. Once you move further away from the larger centres, you are at the mercy of infrequent (but clean and comfortable) bus and train services. These satellite towns occasionally experiment with Night Buses, but the reality is that if you want any kind of independence it will be necessary to either buy a car or import your own (FYI: It is a headache to import a car from the UK – easier to buy one in Spain).

Welcome to Spain

July 28th, 2010

The Costa Blanca (or White Coast) is a 200 kilometre stretch of coastline between Gandia and Pilar de la Horadada. Long hailed by tourists and expats as the idyll from which to escape the dreary climes of the UK, the Costa Blanca is no longer the inexpensive haven it once was. Although still lovely, the conversion from the Peseta to the Euro sent prices skyrocketing and in many parts the cost of living is too high to justify the lack of infrastructure and other support services. Costa Blanca is serviced by the airport in its capital city, Alicante, which is a large connecting airport that runs direct flights to most major European cities. Budget airlines also fly into Alicante, with the most popular being Ryanair, Easyjet and BMIBaby.

The White Cost

July 28th, 2010

Inland from the beaches lies one of Spain’s most fertile areas, well known for the citrus trees that supply fruit worldwide, almond trees that blanket the ground with rich blossom and date palms in massive forests. Here we find beautiful towns and villages such as Pego, Jalon, Orba, Benitachell and Benissa. South of Alicante, the Costa Blanca southern stretch of coastline boasts endless miles of sandy coves and palm fringed beaches, many of which have been awarded Blue Flag status. It is slightly drier than its northern counterpart and the scenery is quite different. Towns and villages scatter the length of the coast. One of the best known is Torrevieja, with its colourful markets, shops and fishing harbour, it remains extremely popular with those wanting easy access to all amenities. Southern Costa Blanca also offers a great choice of golf courses including the prestigious Villamartin, Las Ramblas, Campoamar and La Finca courses. The Costa Blanca is one of those regions where everyone can find their place in the sun, from cosmopolitan towns where life goes on 24 hours a day to sleepy little villages where the peace and tranquility is unique. And with a climate envied the world over, Costa Blanca continues to be one of the most desirable areas for property purchase in all of Europe.

Costa Blanca

July 28th, 2010

The Costa Blanca is the coastline that stretches 170 miles along Spain’s east coast and is centered on Alicante, running from Valencia in the north to La Manga in the south. The countryside at the north end of the Costa Blanca is attractively mountainous and rocky. Northern coastal resorts such as Javea, Denia, Moraira, Calpe and Oliva all have plenty to offer and have a wide selection of property to suit investors and home seekers alike. The area is well serviced by Alicante airport and Alicante is a holiday resort in itself and a wonderful city with great shopping. Along with wonderful beaches, most of the major resorts have facilities for water sports such as skiing, boating and jet-skiing, and several have diving and snorkelling available. Scuba diving has taken off in a big way on the Costa Blanca and wind surfing, now one of Spain’s fastest growing sports, is also very popular here.

Spain goes World Cup Crazy!

July 6th, 2010

As the world cup enters its final week and unfortunately all the St George flags have been removed and probably hidden in embarrassment. Spain is going world cup crazy. The amount of cars adorned with the Spanish flag is on the increase and the size of the German flags seem to be getting bigger! (Bigger is better thoery I think)? Though which will still be flying high on thursday morning? If Spain win against Germany on wednesday, then forget an early night. Spain has the passion and belief to win the World Cup which many teams including England seriously lacked. (A bit of ability comes into it as well).
Prediction: Spain to beat Holland in the final 2-1, to make it a Spanish, Wimbledon and World Cup double.

Costa Blanca Resorts – Playa Flamenca Orihuela Costa

June 18th, 2010

Playa Flamenca Spain – In the true sense of the word, Playa Flamenca on the Orihuela Costa, Spain could not be called a typical Spanish village, in fact up until 1972 it was just a piece of barren but beautiful coastline.

In the early 1970’s a group of Flemish investors decided to develop the area and thanks to them Playa Flamenca has grown into the popular resort that it is today.

Playa Flamenca today, is one of the most desirable locations along this stretch of the coast and the recently refurbished beach area and walkway are a joy to behold, additional work being done further along the coast will give a huge boost to the area. The planned cliff walk will eventually run all the way from Campoamor to the busy town of Torrevieja, taking in the fabulous resorts of Cabo Roig, La Zenia and Punta Prima along the way.

The well known Playa Flamenca market takes place every Saturday and shoppers from miles around flock to this exciting and vibrant market. Located on the main road through Playa Flamenca, from just past the Mercadona supermarket, it stretches for about a mile and although it can get very busy, the wide street on which it is held allows plenty of space for visitors to enjoy the experience.

All manner of goods can be purchased on the Playa Flamenca market, from fresh locally grown produce to clothes, bags, flowers and sweets, don’t forget to grab a freshly spit-roasted chicken while you are there, flavoured with garlic and absolutely delicious. You can also try a Spanish paella or a Spanish omelette, cooked in the traditional way, if you wish you can even watch while it is being created.
