The Santa Barbara Castle of Alicante is one of the largest medieval fortresses in Europe and you will not fail to notice this impressive building on Benacantil Mountain over looking the city. The castle was originally built by the Moors in the 10th century, it got its name from the conquest of King Alfonse on the 4th December 1248, now known as Saint Barbara's day. Over the centuries the castle has been added to and it now has three main areas all from different periods of history.
The Castle suffered bombardments during the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries and it opened to the public in 1963, Santa Barbara Castle has everything a castle should have, cannons, a palace, dungeons, a moat, the remains of church and a lookout tower. The castle is separated into 3 areas: La Torreta, which is where you can see the old keep, the Intermediate area housing the most important rooms such as the hall of Philip II, and the lower area which is home to the 'Revellin del Bon Repos'.
When visiting this majestic castle, you will get the most amazing views from all around, and when you have explored every inch of this fascinating landmark, there are 2 cafe areas for a rest and refreshments.
The Castle of Santa Barbara can be found in Alicante City, the City of Alicante can be reached by taking the N332 or the AP-7 and CV-855 by following the signs depending on you're preference.
