The Mar Menor is the largest salt water lake in Europe and is only 7 metres deep at its lowest point. The Mar Menor is fringed with powdery white sand that slopes gently into the water that warms to around 5 degrees more than the rest of the surrounding Mediterranean.
The Mar Menor is very popular for fishing, water sports and its beaches, the sea also known as the sea of health due to its high salinity (salt content) and natural healing warm muds. The healing properties of the mud flats have been used for thousands of years in both medical and beauty treatments. It is not unusual to see people walking up and down the promenade covered in this foul smelling mud so that they can enjoy the healing benefits.
The Most famous area to enjoy the mud baths is called Las Charcas, there are specially designed mud stations for you to bathe in the mud and benefit from their healing qualities. Las Charcas is situated in The Parque Natural de Salinas Arenales de San Pedro del Pinatar and the mud baths are separated from the Mar Menor by a small strip of land, providing shade for some time out of the hot summer sun.
The Mud flats of Lo Pagan are situated on the Mar Menor just South of San Pedro del Pinatar salt flats. Lo Pagan can be reached via the N332 and is signposted from San Pedro del Pinatar, if you are travelling there from the AP-7 motorway it is signposted from junction 777.
